Hiking
Some beautiful year-round hiking trails can be found in the Parang mountains, in the immediate vicinity of the house. Galcescu Lake, the largest of one of many glacial lakes in the region, can be found on the Parang mountains at an altitude of 1925m. It has been declared a national monument due to its outstanding natural beauty.
The nearby Retezat National Park offers excellent hiking in spectacular surroundings at altitudes of upto 2509 metres.
Paragliding
There is a paragliding school located up the mountain at the end of the chairlift. Tuition and recreational assisted (tandem) flights are available.
Caving and Potholing
There are many caves in the Parang Mountains, and many more await discovery. The most notable of all is the popular 3.5km Muierilor Cave (or "Women's Cave"). Guided tours are offered for 573 metres. Also, the largest vertical cave in the country, at a depth of 121m, is in the neighbouring Valcan Mountains.
Sightseeing
Several historic sites are within driving distance:
- Corvinesti Castle (also referred to as Hunedoara or Huniazi Castle).
A fantastic 14th century gothic castle. Vlad the Impaler (the real prince on which the Dracula character is based) was imprisoned there for 7 years. Located near the city of Hunedoara, 9 miles south of Deva. Open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
- Dacian Fortresses of the Orastie Mountains
These well-preserved remains of military defenses dating back to the century 1 B.C. form several UNESCO World Heritage sites, the closest of which can be found at Banita, approximately 30km away.
- Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa.
The ruins of the 2000 year old Dacian capital and the 13th century Densus Church are around an hour away.
